At present Bourchier does not use AI technology for editing or indexing.
Editing
All our editorial processes are managed solely by human personnel. Of course we recognise that AI may bring time and cost benefits, but, according to our experience to date, AI tools cannot detect or avoid cultural and political bias or linguistic infelicities in ways that human editors can.
Indexing
As of July 2025, professional reports confirm that LLMs typically under-index book-length works, do not provide adequate structure or cross-references, and can insert false information into the index. See, for example, Statement on AI in Indexing – Digital Publications Indexing
Translation & post-editing
To date Bourchier has not encountered an AI translation programme that approaches the quality achieved by our own translators. But in direct response to client demand, we are providing AI translation and post-editing to those publishers who have requested such services. Please refer to our post-editing case studies for more information.
Moreover, as AI is a rapidly evolving discipline we are continually researching the potential application of AI to our work. We therefore expect this policy to evolve as new technology, tools and use cases emerge and we will consult with our clients should our position change.
